Nigeria 1-1 Zimbabwe: Super Eagles World Cup hopes falter with late draw in Uyo

By: Dayo Awoniyi

Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup took a major blow on Tuesday as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

The Super Eagles began the match with intensity, dominating possession and creating several chances.

It seemed as though Victor Osimhen’s 75th-minute strike would secure all three points for Nigeria, but a dramatic late equalizer from Tawanda Chirewa denied the hosts the victory.

Chirewa’s goal in the dying minutes of the game left Nigeria heartbroken and unable to capitalize on their earlier dominance.

With the draw, Nigeria remains in fourth place in the group with just seven points from six matches, while Zimbabwe stays at the bottom with four points.

South Africa, who capitalized on Nigeria’s slip-up, extended their lead at the top of the table, moving five points clear with a 2-0 win over Benin Republic. Rwanda also gained ground, climbing to second place with a 1-1 draw against Lesotho.

The result serves as a major wake-up call for the Super Eagles, who now face an uphill battle to secure qualification.

With just four matches remaining, Nigeria must regroup quickly and improve their form if they are to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
