Baciro Cande attributes Guinea Bissau historic win over Nigeria to luck

By Monsurah Olatunji

Guinea Bissau national team coach Baciro Cande believes his team’s historic 1-0 victory in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers was out of sheer ‘luck’ on Friday.
The Super Eagles had defeated Guinea-Bissau 2-0 at the last Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon through goals from Sadiq Umar and Willliam Troost-Ekong to seal a group stage victory.
However, the Wild Dogs came back determined to get revenge as they beat the Nigerians for the first time in their history in front of their home fans in Abuja, ending the hosts’ 19-game unbeaten run in AFCON qualifiers.
Despite the win, the tactician believes his 118-globally ranked team were lucky as they upset the three-time African champions sitting 83 places above them in the FIFA world rankings.
“It is not easy, Nigeria have the ball and a lot of chance[s] to score, but Guinea Bissau have the luck today, and we win 1-0,” Cande told media after the match.
With the sides set to meet again in three days, Guinea-Bissau have now leapfrogged Nigeria in group A with seven points from three games.
