2025 WAFU U20 Championship postponement halts Flying Eagles’ preparations

By Dayo Awoniyi

The Nigeria U20 men’s national team have officially ended their training camp in Abuja following the indefinite postponement of the 2025 WAFU A and B U20 Championship.

The Flying Eagles concluded its preparations on Tuesday, with players and officials departing the camp on Wednesday.

The decision comes after the Ghana Football Association (GFA), host of the regional tournament, informed all 16 participating countries of the postponement. A new date has yet to be announced.

Originally set to run from June 15 to 30 in Ghana, the inaugural WAFU A and B U20 Championship was designed to promote youth football development in West Africa.

It was also intended as a key part of Nigeria’s build-up to the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.

As one of four African nations already qualified for the global tournament, Nigeria had hoped to use the regional competition to evaluate players and finalize squad plans ahead of the World Cup.

Team officials have stated they will await further communication from WAFU and the GFA before outlining new preparatory plans.
