Peter ‘Apo’ Fregene, the legendary former goalkeeper of Nigeria’s Green Eagles, has passed away at the age of 77.

Fregene, who had been on life support for the past week, died peacefully earlier today in the presence of his wife, Tina, and two of his children.

Fregene, who was known for his outstanding contributions to Nigerian football, represented the Green Eagles during the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games, among other international competitions. He was widely respected for his exceptional talent and leadership on and off the field.

The Nigerian football community, alongside Olympians and sports persons, has expressed heartfelt condolences to Fregene’s family during this difficult time. A statement from his family expressed gratitude for the prayers and support they received during his final days.

“On behalf of all generations of Nigerian footballers, Olympians, sports persons, his family, friends, fans, and the many incredible Nigerians who quietly rallied around and supported him, I say a big ‘thank you,’” the family said in a statement.
