Ike Shorunmu lifts lid on his shock exit as Super Eagles’ goalkeeper trainer
By Wale Mustapha
Former Nigerian international goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu has opened up on the reasons behind his purported sacking as trainer for the country’s senior national team.
In May 2022,  Shorunmu was named the Super Eagles’ goalkeeper trainer while Eboboritse Uwejamomere upon the appointment of Jose Peseiro as new handler alongside Finidi George, Usman Abdallah as his assistant coaches.

Shorunmu was replaced by Olatunji Baruwa as goalkeeper trainer of Super Eagles and the Nigeria Football Federation, had offered reasons for his exit ahead of 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea-Bissau.

Besides citing its rotational policy in a statement, the NFF said that Shorunmu was dropped from the team as he “showed a clear lack of desire to be in camp for the matches against Guinea Bissau.”
In a swift response, Shorunmu  denied the NFF’s claim, stating that the federation didn’t act professionally.
“Its easy for the NFF to say that I didn’t show desire to report to camp because the people at the helm are earning their salaries, while we the assistant coaches are working without contracts since May 2022 and haven’t been paid for months,” Shorunmu said on Brilla FM.
Super Eagles will begin the double header clash against the Djurtus in Abuja on Friday before t reverse fixture on Monday in Bissau.
