The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has embarked on a groundbreaking project, marking the start of construction for a modern players’ hostel and training pitches within the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

Funded by FIFA, this initiative is set to enhance the legacy of the Ibrahim Gusau-led NFF administration, garnering support from football stakeholders and enthusiasts worldwide.

The ceremony, which took place on Tuesday, was officiated by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, GCON.

Abbas lauded the project as a “noble” endeavor and assured full backing from the National Assembly. Gelson Fernandes, FIFA’s Deputy Chief Member Associations Officer and Regional Director (Africa), recounted FIFA’s pleasure in financing the project, emphasizing the development of infrastructure as a key pillar of FIFA’s global vision.

NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, who took office on September 30, 2022, expressed his pride in the initiative, referring to it as a significant legacy for Nigerian football.

e emphasized that the new facilities would provide a conducive environment for all national teams, leagues, and academies, thereby improving team management while significantly reducing operational costs.

“The hostel and training pitches will ensure the highest standards for our national teams. This project is more than just infrastructure; it is a vital part of our commitment to raising the standard of Nigerian football,” Gusau stated.

The groundbreaking ceremony saw the attendance of key figures including Alhaji Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission; CG Bashir Adeniyi, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service; and Nigerian football legend Olusegun Odegbami.

The project, expected to be completed within 24 months, is poised to transform Nigeria’s football infrastructure and contribute to the long-term development of the sport in the country.
