NWFL Premiership: Whyte Ogbonda revels in Rivers Angels win at Sunshine Stars

By Wale Mustapha

Head Coach of Rivers Angels, Whyte Ogbonda, has attributed his team’s spirited performance against Sunshine Stars to the extra motivation provided by the Rivers State Government.

In a hard-fought Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership encounter, the Jewels of Rivers secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Sunshine Stars in Akure on Wednesday, courtesy of Peace Effiong’s first-half strike.

This crucial win propelled the former league champions towards securing a spot in this season’s Super Six playoffs.

Ogbonda praised his players for their resilience, particularly in the challenging second half, which ultimately earned them the vital three points. He emphasized the importance of carrying this momentum forward into the next fixture.

“It was a very difficult match for us, especially considering our recent loss to Edo Queens two weeks ago,” the former Confluence Queens’ coach emphasized.

“Coming back to defeat Delta Queens was a significant turnaround, but there was still pressure on us to secure a win today, and we managed to do just that.

“The team was well motivated before we left Port Harcourt for this match, and that motivation played a crucial role in our victory.

“Now that we’ve secured our place in the Super Six, our focus shifts to our upcoming match against Bayelsa Queens. We cannot afford to relax; we must maintain our momentum and secure another three points.”

Rivers Angels are set to face Bayelsa Queens in Port Harcourt on April 17th after the Eld-el-Fitr break.
