Former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia has left out Mikel Obi from his Nigeria all-time best XI, citing the player’s “stubborn” attitude as the reason.

Siasia, who was asked to name his all-time greatest Super Eagles XI, notably omitted Mikel from his list. This decision raised eyebrows, considering Mikel’s achievements, including winning the 2013 AFCON, numerous trophies with Chelsea, and leading Siasia’s team to win Olympic bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

In a special podcast by Elegbete1sports shared by ATHLST on X, Siasia explained his decision, pointing to Mikel’s attitude as the determining factor.

“Mikel Obi is a little bit out of my league. He’s stubborn, I can’t tolerate people like that,” Siasia revealed.

Siasia further elaborated that Mikel’s stubbornness was a significant challenge during his time coaching the national team. However, he acknowledged Mikel’s leadership qualities, particularly during the Rio 2016 Olympics.

“But at the Olympics (Rio 2016), he came out and played because I had warned him severally. He played as a captain, he led the team well, that was why we got to where we got to,” Siasia added.

While Mikel’s omission from Siasia’s all-time best XI may surprise many fans, Siasia’s comments shed light on the complexities of player-coach relationships and the importance of attitude and leadership on the field.
