Super Eagles World Cup Qualifiers opponent Zimbabwe get new coach

Nigeria’s opponent in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, Zimbabwe have announced a new head coach ahead of their next assignment.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) announced the appointment of Michael Nees as the national team head coach on Tuesday.

The 57 year old will lead the Warriors in their quest to qualify via the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

“ZIFA is confident that Michael Nees appointment will usher in a new era of success for the Warriors,” Lincoln Mutasa, Chairman ZIFA Normalizion Committee said.

“His vast experience, combined with his innovative coaching style, makes him the ideal candidate to lead out national team to new height.” He concluded.

Nees brings wealth of experience and a distinguished background to the role. He guided various national teams in over 200 international matches.

In 2005 and 2006, he was part of the support staff for England national team during the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

His other national team experience include head coach of Rwanda national team and Director coaching and education at the South Africa Football Association (SAFA).

After the conclusion of the 2025 AFCON Qualifiers this year, Zimbabwe will face Nigeria in 2025 in the World Cup Qualifiers.

The Super Eagles on the other hand is yet to appoint a new head coach after the resignation of Finidi George who had since joined Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side, Rivers United.
