William Troost-Ekong bids farewell to PAOK ahead of Saudi switch

Nigeria international William Troost-Ekong, the 2023 AFCON Player of the Tournament, has officially announced his departure from Greek champions PAOK FC after a successful year with the club.

The Super Eagles vice-captain played a pivotal role in PAOK’s Super League title win last season, contributing to six clean sheets in 22 appearances and scoring once across all competitions. Despite a promising start to his three-year contract signed in July 2023, Troost-Ekong suffered a serious injury—a ruptured biceps femoris in his right leg—in February. This injury required surgery and sidelined him for the remainder of the season.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, the 30-year-old centre-back expressed his gratitude and bid farewell to the club, staff, and fans.

“After an amazing year and season in Thessaloniki, I want to thank everyone for the opportunity to share and be part of those moments with you,” he wrote.

“I am grateful to the President, club staff, medical team, General Lucescu, assistants, and especially my teammates, who have become like family. Your belief and hard work led to an unforgettable championship and special European nights.

“To the fans, thank you for your support through difficult times. Toumba is something special, and now I understand what Mono PAOK means. I wish everyone another successful season, and I will continue to follow PAOK. All the best! Will.”

As Troost-Ekong moves on to his next challenge, he leaves PAOK with a league title to his name.
