Osimhen or Lookman: Giulio Ebagua picks his GOAT

By Monsurah Olatunji

Former Torino and Como striker Giulio Ebagua has shared his thoughts on the qualities of Nigeria’s rising stars, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, two of the brightest footballing talents from the country.

Both players have earned significant acclaim in recent years, with Osimhen playing a crucial role in helping Napoli secure their first Serie A title in over three decades.

He has broken records, including becoming the first African player to win the Serie A Golden Boot, and has become a key figure for both club and country.

Meanwhile, Lookman enjoyed a stellar 2024, culminating in his crowning as CAF Player of the Year, following in the footsteps of Osimhen, who won the same award in 2023.

Speaking about the impact of these two players, Ebagua—born in Benin City, Nigeria—acknowledged Osimhen’s undeniable talent, despite admitting that the Super Eagles striker’s style is not to his personal taste.

“I have to be honest: I didn’t particularly like him [Osimhen] from a technical and stylistic point of view, but he always stands out for the many goals he scores,” Ebagua said, as reported by Europa Calcio. “Osimhen is a certainty in every team he plays for, including the national team. Even if I’m not crazy about him from a technical point of view, the numbers speak for him.”

On Lookman, Ebagua was effusive in his praise, calling the forward a “phenomenon” with incredible qualities that continue to improve.

“Lookman has incredible qualities and can always improve. He is a phenomenon in terms of characteristics. He can play anywhere and is extraordinary as a human being,” Ebagua said.

“Next year, I think he should leave Atalanta, even though the club is doing well. In my personal opinion, Lookman can aspire to Real Madrid, Manchester United, Barcelona—wherever he wants. He will improve further and raise the bar even higher.”

Both players are undeniably among the brightest Nigerian talents on the global stage, and with their remarkable growth, the debate over who is the GOAT among them is set to continue for years to come.
