By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Nigeria’s senior women’s national team striker, Chioma Okafor got her season off to the perfect start, scoring the decisive goal in the University of Connecticut’s 1-0 win over Stony Brook at Morrone Stadium.
Okafor, who is expected to spearhead UConn’s attack this season, struck her first goal of the campaign to secure all three points for the Huskies.
The Super Falcons forward will be looking to build on the strong start as she leads the line for UConn in the 2025 season.
Last month, she was part of Nigerian side that won the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Although she couldn’t play the games due to injury which she has recovered from, Nigeria’s winning mentality is now having positive impact on her club career.
Malawian born Okafor switched allegiance to Nigeria ahead of WAFCON 2024 and is now reaping the benefits of the switch.
Success in the United States university soccer system is expected to serve as leeway for future breakthroughs for the young player.
