Former Super Eagles Forward Michael Eneramo Dies After Collapse During Friendly Match

Former Nigerian international striker Michael Eneramo has tragically passed away after collapsing on the pitch during a local friendly match in Ungwan Yelwa, Kaduna, on Friday morning.
Early reports suggest the 38-year-old forward suffered a suspected cardiac arrest just five minutes into the second half, having completed the entire first half of the game.
Born on November 26, 1985, in Kaduna, Eneramo carved out a respected career both internationally and at club level. He earned 10 caps for the Nigerian national team, the Nigeria national football team, after turning down an opportunity to represent Tunisia.
His debut came in a goalless friendly against Jamaica in London on February 11, 2009. He scored his first international goal later that year in a 1–1 draw with Ireland, also in London. Eneramo went on to feature in several key matches, including Nigeria’s 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and a notable 1–0 victory over France in Saint-Étienne.
One of his most memorable moments in national colours came during a World Cup qualifier against Tunisia in Abuja on September 6, 2009, where he found the net in a 2–2 draw.
At club level, Eneramo enjoyed a successful career in North Africa and Europe. He became a fan favorite at Espérance Sportive de Tunis, where his powerful playing style earned him the nickname “Al Dababa” (The Tank). He later played for top Turkish sides including Beşiktaş J.K., Sivasspor, and İstanbul Başakşehir F.K..
Reacting to the tragic news, Nigeria Football Federation General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi expressed deep sorrow, stating that the loss is devastating and offering prayers for strength to his family and the Nigerian football community.
Eneramo’s sudden passing is a significant loss to Nigerian football, especially for those who admired his strength, dedication, and contributions both at home and abroad.
