Nigeria-eligible Isaac Schmidt seals loan move to Werder Bremen

By Oluwadamilola Olaleye

Nigeria-eligible midfielder Isaac Schmidt has joined SV Werder Bremen on a season-long loan from Leeds United, where he will link up with compatriot Felix Agu.

Werder Bremen’s director of professional football, Peter Niemeyer, confirmed that the agreement includes an option to buy the 25-year-old once the loan expires.

“I’m happy to be here and am looking forward to my time at Werder,” Schmidt said on arrival. “I’m convinced that we will be able to achieve our goals together.”

Born in Switzerland to a Swiss-German father and a Nigerian mother, Schmidt has made 14 competitive appearances for Leeds since joining in the summer of 2024.

Head coach Horst Steffen welcomed the addition, noting Schmidt’s blend of energy and tactical discipline:

“Isaac brings a strong tactical understanding with him, in addition to pace and energy. He’s match-fit and will help strengthen our team.”

Before moving to England, Schmidt spent three seasons at FC St. Gallen, racking up seven goals in 108 matches across all competitions between 2021 and 2024.
