Ex-PSG star Okpara Identifies Arsenal’s Costly Mistake in Champions League Final

Former Nigeria defender Godwin Okpara has reflected on Arsenal’s heartbreaking UEFA Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, insisting the Premier League champions would have lifted the trophy had they converted their dominance into a second goal.

Arsenal, chasing their first-ever Champions League title, made a dream start in the final when Kai Havertz fired them into the lead inside six minutes. However, despite a disciplined defensive display for much of the contest, the Gunners were eventually pegged back by the defending champions before losing on penalties.

PSG equalised through Ousmane Dembélé from the penalty spot after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was brought down in the area, forcing the match into extra time and eventually a shootout.

In the decisive penalty kicks, Arsenal missed twice through Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhães, while PSG converted four of their five efforts to secure a dramatic 4-3 victory and successfully defend their European crown.

Speaking exclusively to Soccernet.ng, Okpara praised Arsenal’s game plan but believed their inability to find a second goal proved costly.

“For Arsenal, I think they did all they could,” Okpara said.

“When you are playing a final of that magnitude and you score first but fail to get the second goal, it puts pressure on you.

“If they had managed to score a second goal, I think the match would have been for Arsenal.”

The former PSG defender noted that Arsenal’s strategy was built around capitalising on mistakes from the French side rather than dominating possession.

“PSG controlled most of the game and Arsenal were trying to take advantage of their mistakes. Unfortunately, they could not make those moments count.

“When you play against a team with such attacking quality, you must stay fully concentrated until the final whistle. PSG are a very dangerous attacking side and they eventually found a way back into the game.”

Despite Arsenal’s disappointment, Okpara believes the North London club can take valuable lessons from the experience and challenge again next season.

“It is painful for them, but they can come back stronger. Reaching the final shows the quality they have.”

Okpara also praised PSG for retaining the title and making more history in European football.

“It is a fantastic achievement for PSG. Winning the Champions League for the first time was already special, but defending it immediately makes it even more remarkable.

“Both teams made history in their own way and it was a wonderful final to watch.”

PSG’s victory means the French giants will now face Europa League winners Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup, scheduled for August, as they continue to build on their growing European success.
