Hugo Broos slams Free State Stadium pitch ahead of Nigeria clash

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has criticised the condition of the Free State Stadium pitch in Bloemfontein, just days before Bafana Bafana face Nigeria in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Broos, who has been putting his squad through preparations ahead of the high-stakes fixture, described the playing surface as “far from ideal” for an international encounter of this magnitude.

“The pitch is not good, and this is disappointing for a game of this level,” Broos told IOL after inspecting the ground.

“We are preparing for one of the biggest matches of the qualifiers against Nigeria, and players deserve a proper surface to express themselves. Unfortunately, this is not what we have here.”

The Belgian tactician warned that a poor surface could disrupt the technical quality of the game and increase the risk of injuries, stressing that both teams would be disadvantaged if urgent action is not taken.

Broos highlighted the importance of good conditions for players like Percy Tau, Lyle Foster, and Nigeria’s star names, arguing that a heavy pitch could stifle attacking football and “kill the rhythm of the game.”

The South African Football Association (SAFA) is reportedly in talks with stadium authorities to ensure remedial work is carried out before matchday, though concerns remain that the short turnaround time may not be enough for significant improvements.

The Group C showdown between Bafana Bafana and the Super Eagles is scheduled for later this week in Bloemfontein, with both sides chasing a vital three points in their push for World Cup qualification.
