Werder Bremen address fitness concerns over Victor Boniface

By Oluwadamilola Olaleye

Werder Bremen are reportedly addressing growing concerns over the physical condition of Nigerian striker Victor Boniface, particularly issues related to excess weight and overall fitness.

Boniface, on loan from Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen, has struggled to hit peak form since joining the club, with internal assessments pointing to subpar fitness levels as a contributing factor.

According to BILD, sources within the Bremen camp believe the 23-year-old is carrying excess weight, which is placing additional strain on his knees—already vulnerable from two past cruciate ligament injuries.

The club’s medical and coaching staff have been working intensively to improve his conditioning, aware of the risks posed by his injury history. The situation is reportedly being complicated by both genetic predisposition and a high-calorie diet.

Werder Bremen’s Managing Director of Professional Football, Clemens Fritz, confirmed the club is taking a comprehensive approach to support Boniface’s physical development.

“Together with Victor, we have clearly identified the issues and are supporting him from all angles,” Fritz said.

“This includes athletic training, physiotherapy, and nutritional guidance. We are working closely with him. He’s accepted our support and is fully committed—he’s even skipping days off to train.”

Boniface’s proactive attitude has been welcomed by the club, as he continues to put in extra training sessions in a bid to return to top condition.

Bremen remain optimistic that a structured fitness and nutrition plan will help the Leverkusen loanee rediscover the sharpness that once made him one of the Bundesliga’s most dynamic forwards.
