Jose Peseiro Misses Out on Real Madrid Coaching Role as Mourinho Reshapes Backroom Staff

Former Nigeria coach,  José Peseiro has reportedly missed out on a chance to join the coaching staff of Real Madrid under José Mourinho, as speculation grows over changes to the Portuguese manager’s technical team.

Peseiro, who previously worked with Mourinho earlier in his coaching career, was believed to be among the leading candidates considered for an assistant coaching position. The potential move was linked to plans for a broader restructuring of Mourinho’s backroom staff ahead of a possible return to top-level European football.

However, reports indicate that Mourinho has instead chosen former Germany international and ex-Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira to join his coaching team, effectively ending discussions about a reunion with Peseiro in Madrid.

The 63-year-old Portuguese coach had been attracting interest following his recent success with the Nigeria national football team, where he guided the Super Eagles to a runners-up finish at the Africa Cup of Nations 2023. His experience at both club and international level had strengthened his case for a return to elite European football.

Despite that setback, Peseiro remains focused on his current role with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ula FC. However, his future at the club is uncertain following their failure to achieve promotion in the most recent campaign.

With internal reviews expected in the coming weeks, the experienced coach may soon face key decisions about the next phase of his managerial career. While a return to Mourinho’s coaching circle now appears unlikely, Peseiro’s extensive résumé is expected to keep him in contention for other opportunities in international and club football.
