Super Eagles rise to 38th in latest FIFA World Rankings

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria has moved up three places to 38th in the latest FIFA World Rankings released on Wednesday, despite missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles played two competitive matches over the past month. They produced a commanding performance to thrash Gabon 4–1 in the World Cup playoff semi-final, before battling to a 1–1 draw with DR Congo in the final. Nigeria ultimately lost 4–3 on penalties, ending their qualification hopes.

However, the results — particularly the emphatic win over Gabon — proved sufficient to boost their standing on the global table.

Nigeria now has a total of 1,502.46 points, placing them fifth in Africa, behind only Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, and Algeria.

African teams in the latest ranking:

Morocco remains the continent’s highest-ranked team with 1,713.12 points.

Senegal sits 19th globally with 1,648.07 points.

Egypt occupies 34th on 1,520.68 points.

Algeria follows closely in 35th with 1,516.37 points.

Despite the disappointment of missing the World Cup, the rankings boost reflects Nigeria’s competitive performances under head coach Eric Chelle.
