By Wale Mustapha
Former Nigeria defender Ifeanyi Udeze has said that Argentina did more than France to emerge champions of 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The historic final played at the Lusail Stadium ended as arguably the best final of FIFA World Cup in recent years where six goals were recorded in the 120 minutes of enthralling football action..
Both sides canceled exact other’s out after the entire duration with extra time moments before it ended in a shootouts which Argentina won by 4-2.
Udeze who also had World Cup experience in 2002 with Nigeria opined that France’w approach to the final was wrong and it culminated to how it ended for them.
“They (France) could have started the game with the intensity with which they played the second half,” the former Nigeria international reiterated.
“The solution was to attack, attack and attack the Argentines. They were not supposed to relax if there was to be a change on fortunes earlier.
“They were playing ‘serere’ football and that wouldn’t help you. Aside the Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo rivalry, a lot of Africans supported France because most of their players have African backgrounds.
“They (France) did their best but congratulations to Messi. He has really worked hard to achieve this,” he added.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly the held in United States, Mexico and Canada.
