By Monsurah Olatunji
Egypt U20 men’s head coach Mahmoud Gaber admitted Nigeria are their biggest threat in the group stages ahead of the U20 African Cup of Nations which kicks off in February 2023 on home soil.
The Egyptians were pitted in Group A alongside Senegal, Mozambique and seven-time champions Nigeria, who will be making their 12th appearance at the biennial tournament and remains the most successful team with seven titles.
And the Pharoahs handler is confident they can excel despite the pedigree of their opponents as they are aiming for their fifth U20 Afcon crown on home ground.
“The Egyptian national team includes a distinguished group of players, and the team that plays for the title must win all matches, starting with Nigeria – a very strong team,” Gaber told media.
“I know all the teams present in the tournament very well, but the Egypt group is the toughest among the three groups.
“My full confidence is in the players of the Egyptian national team, I appeal to the Egyptian fans to attend the tournament matches to strongly support the players to qualify for the World Cup and win the title,” he concluded.
The North Africans will take on Flying Eagles in the opening match of the competition before facing Senegal and Mozambique to complete group A matches.
The Egyptians will fancy their chances when the tournament get underway from February 19 and March 11, 2023, with the top four teams advancing to the FIFA U20 World Cup in Indonesia in May.
