Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal not enough to save Leicester City from FA Cup ouster

By Monsurah Olatunji

Kelechi Iheanacho has continued his impressive goalscoring run in the FA Cup as his Leicester City side fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Blackburn Rovers in the fifth round of the competition.
Despite emerging as the match winner for the Foxes in the previous rounds against Gillingham and Walsall, the Nigerian International didn’t make Brendan Rodgers’ starting lineup.
Against wishes, the Championship side showed character and urgency to secure an upset, and they took the lead just after the half-hour mark as Tyrhys Dolan capitalized on Daniel Amartey’s sloppy pass.
Sammie Szmodics then doubled the lead in the 52nd minute, as Iheanacho watched from the bench.
The Super Eagles striker was brought on six minutes later to help sail the sinking ship to safety and he pulled one back for the Foxes after ten minutes of him on the pitch but couldn’t save the Premier League side from defeat.
With his goal, Iheanacho has now scored 18 goals in the FA Cup appearance – a feat no player has more since he made his debut in the competition.
Currently sitting in one of the playoff places in the Championship, Blackburn Rovers booked their place in the quarterfinals of the competition for the first time since 2015.
