Obi Ogbala confident of Heartland Queens’ NWFL Premiership survival
By Saheed Afolabi
Heartland Queens coach, Obi Ogbala has expressed confident that his side will escape relegation in the Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership following a 0-0 draw with holders Bayelsa Queens in Owerri.
The Owerri based outfit gained promoted to the country’s topflight in August 2022 but are now in desperate times to  avoid relegation to the lower league this season, with just two points off the foot of the Group A log.
Ogbala had been elevated to the head coach role following sacking of his former boss Ben Nwoke in February 2023 but suffered a losing start in 3-1 defeat at Delta Queens on March 22.
They however, gave their survival hopes a huge boost with a draw against Domo Okara’s ladies and the former Nasarawa Amazons and Rivers Angels gaffer is proud of his side’s progress in push for topflight survival.
“All of us watched the match I believe there is an improvement. We are going back, good a thing we are resting, we are on bye for the next matchday,” Ogbala told the club’s media.
“We are going to work on the lapses we observed in this match. Sure, we are going to keep our position in the NWFL Premiership.
“Looking at this very match, our game plan was to win, at least, to be more comfortable on the log but the remaining two matches. We are going to work tirelessly to see that we maintain our place in the Premiership.
“We are equally working on attack but not necessarily the attack alone because the type of team we are presenting is one anyone can score, that’s why our defenders have been able to score.
“The overview of the attacking system is that we use everyone, anybody can score not only the attackers. However, we are working towards that to make sure we put in more goals in our subsequent matches.”
Heartland Queens ranked fifth on the NWFL Premiership group A standings with nine points from ten matches and will need to record a win in their last two matches to guarantee their topflight safety this season.
