2021/2022 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership champions, Bayelsa Queens edged eight-time Federation Cup winners, Rivers Angels on penalties to win its second Federation Cup title on Wednesday.
The final which took place at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State capital rekindled the South-South derby and solidified the Yenegoa-based side’s dominance over its neighbours from Port Harcourt.
The Prosperity Girls had won the previous three encounters between both sides in the calendar year 2023 and should have won the game in 90 minutes but lacked the cutting edge upfront.
After a drab goalless draw in the first half, Flourish Sabastine forced Rivers Angels’ goalkeeper into a brilliant save in the second half.
On the other hand, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu also had a clear chance for a possible winner for Edwin Okon’s side but her effort inside the box went wide.
With both sides not separated after 90 minutes, the game went straight into penalties.
Domo Okara’s side scored four of its spot kicks with Edet Glory playing her penalty over the bar.
Eight-time Federation Cup champions scored two and missed two of its spot kicks as Chiamaka missed while Bayelsa Queens goalie, Okeke Onyinye also saved another penalty to hand her side a 4-2 win.
The win sealed Bayelsa’s back-to-back Federation Cup title after its first in 2021 when they pipped Robo Queens.
The Yenagoa based outfit which finished second at the 2022/2023 NWFL Premiership Super Six behind winners, Delta Queens will feel a sigh of relief with a trophy at the end of a rewarding season.
