The Final Draw for the FIFA World Cup 2026 will be held on Friday, December 5, 2025, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., FIFA and the White House have confirmed.
The announcement was made by U.S. President Donald J. Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, marking a key milestone on the road to the first-ever 48-team World Cup — the largest in history.
Team officials, ambassadors, host city representatives, global media, and fans will gather in Washington to witness the unveiling of the group-stage fixtures that will define football’s grandest stage.
“The draw is a major tournament milestone and one that will continue the remarkable build-up to the biggest sporting event ever,” Infantino said.
“We look forward to welcoming delegations, partners, media, and fans representing each of the 16 host cities to the U.S. capital for this historic occasion.”
Among Africa’s heavyweights, Nigeria is on course to secure its eighth FIFA World Cup appearance after navigating the African qualifying series. The Super Eagles, who famously reached the Round of 16 in 1994, 1998, and 2014, are expected to be one of the continent’s strongest representatives at the expanded finals.
For Nigerian fans, the draw will determine the country’s path toward a deeper run on the global stage, with hopes high that the new generation of stars such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Victor Boniface can power the team into uncharted territory.
FIFA confirmed that the host nations — Mexico (A1), Canada (B1), and USA (D1) — will take seeded spots. By December, 42 nations will have secured automatic qualification, while the last six spots will be decided in March 2026 through a play-off mini-tournament.
Already qualified are Argentina (defending champions), Brazil, Australia, Ecuador, Iran, Japan, Jordan (debutants), Korea Republic, New Zealand, and Uzbekistan (first-time qualifiers). Nigeria, alongside other African contenders, is widely tipped to join this list before the December draw.
In an unprecedented move, FIFA announced that fans from the 16 host cities across Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. will attend the ceremony via a special ticket lottery, with select winners enjoying VIP experiences.
The Kennedy Center, America’s national cultural hub and a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy, will host the draw starting at 12:00 local time (18:00 CET), with the FIFA World Cup Trophy on display. The event will be broadcast globally by FIFA’s media partners.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will officially kick off at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca on June 11, 2026, with the final set for July 19, 2026, at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
For Nigeria, the build-up to the tournament has been charged with anticipation, as millions of fans dream of seeing the Super Eagles soar beyond their past achievements on the world’s biggest stage.
