Nigeria shot-stopper Maduka Okoye named Serie A’s Best Goalkeeper in 2024

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nigeria international Maduka Okoye has been ranked the best goalkeeper in Italy’s Serie A, following a standout performance this season with Udinese.

According to recent statistics from Mondoudinese, Okoye has made the most saves within the box this campaign, surpassing other top keepers in Italy’s top division.

The 25-year-old recently returned to Italy after playing in the Super Eagles’ final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Rwanda, marking his first start for the national team in over two years.

Although he conceded two goals in the match, his solid performances for Udinese have drawn widespread praise.

After a challenging period at Watford, where he made just two appearances, Okoye’s return to form with the Bianconeri has been impressive. His consistent performances have earned him a spot back in the national team for their last eight internationals.

Since joining Udinese in August 2023, Okoye has stood out for his impressive statistics, particularly in the critical area of goals conceded versus goals predicted. With 30 saves so far this season,

Okoye leads the Serie A rankings in this category, ahead of notable names such as Zion Suzuki (Parma) with 29 saves, Vanja Milinković-Savić (Torino) with 28, Stefano Turati (Monza) with 25, and Wladimiro Falcone (Lecce) with 25.

In 12 Serie A appearances this season, Okoye has conceded 18 goals while keeping three clean sheets. His stellar form helped Udinese to secure crucial points, with the goalkeeper’s contract extended in August 2024 to keep him at the club until the 2027-2028 season.

Okoye’s rise in Serie A marks a new chapter in his career, cementing his place as one of the league’s most reliable goalkeepers.
