NPFL: Sporting Lagos in relegation troubles after home loss to Plateau

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Sporting Lagos approaches the last two games of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season with their league status uncertain.

On Wednesday, the Lagos-based side suffered a 2-1 loss to Plateau United at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan which deemed their hopes of beating the drop in a nervy debut campaign.

Two first-half goals from Chimezie Izuchukwu and Bernard Mundi lifted the Jos-based side to a 2-0 lead.

Jonathan Alukwu reduced the deficit for Sporting Lagos but that couldn’t prevent a loss.

The setback ensured that Sporing Lagos occupied the 17th position and the last relegation spot with 43 points after 36 games.

The team is a point behind Bayelsa United which is in 16th place and two points short of 15th positioned Sunshine Stars.

They will have to pick positive results in the last two games to avoid relegation.

A home match against two-time Africa champions, Enyimba FC will be crucial before taking a short trip to Ibadan to face continental-chasing Shooting Stars Sports Club in the final game of the season.

Should they beat the drop, two Lagos-based teams will play top-flight football next season after the promotion of Ikorodu City FC from second-tier Nigeria National League (NNL) on Wednesday.
