Nigeria international Taiwo Awoniyi delivered a standout performance with two goals as Nottingham Forest F.C. defeated Chelsea F.C. 3-1 in their English Premier League encounter at Stamford Bridge.
The visitors made an explosive start, going ahead just two minutes into the match. Awoniyi climbed above the defence to head home emphatically, putting Chelsea on the back foot early.
Despite fielding a side that included Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernández, and João Pedro, the hosts struggled to assert control.
Forest extended their lead after Awoniyi was brought down in the box by Malo Gusto. Referee Anthony Taylor awarded a penalty following a VAR check, and Igor Jesus made no mistake from the spot.
The Nigerian forward added his second goal early in the second half, finishing off a quick counter-attack led by Morgan Gibbs-White to effectively put the game beyond Chelsea.
João Pedro later pulled one back for the hosts with a spectacular bicycle kick, but it proved to be only a consolation.
The result leaves Chelsea ninth on 48 points, now 10 points adrift of the UEFA Champions League places with only a handful of games left.
For Nottingham Forest, the win provides a vital lift in their relegation battle, while Awoniyi’s brace highlights his growing influence in the squad.
