CHAN 2024: Super Eagles B set for Senegal clash as CAF increases prize money

By Oluwadamilola Olaleye

Nigeria’s Super Eagles B are ready to begin their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign with a high-stakes opener against defending champions Senegal, as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announces a significant increase in prize money and unveils a new tournament trophy.

This year’s CHAN, exclusively for players active in their domestic leagues, kicks off today with hosts Tanzania facing Burkina Faso in the curtain-raiser.

The tournament will be co-hosted for the first time by three East African nations — Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya — with matches to be played across Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Kampala, and Nairobi.

The final is scheduled for August 30 at the Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi.

In a bid to further elevate the tournament’s prestige, CAF has introduced a new championship trophy and confirmed a substantial financial boost for participating teams.

The CHAN 2024 winners will receive $3.5 million — a 75% increase from the previous edition — while the overall prize pool has been raised by 32% to $10.4 million.

Nigeria, drawn into one of the most competitive groups, will have to navigate a tough path featuring continental powerhouses. Alongside the Super Eagles B and Senegal, past winners Morocco and DR Congo, as well as heavyweights Algeria and Zambia, are all expected to mount serious title challenges.

The tournament promises high-intensity matchups and offers a key platform for domestic-based players to showcase their talent on the continental stage, with the lure of increased financial reward adding further incentive.
