CHAN 2024: Senegal and Congo Share Spoils, boosting Super Eagles’ qualification hopes

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Defending champions Senegal were held to a 1-1 draw by Congo in their second group-stage match at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 on Tuesday, a result that keeps Nigeria’s qualification hopes alive.

Declan Moussavou put Congo ahead in the 19th minute, finishing from a precise Charles Atipo cross.

However, with just eight minutes left on the clock, Layousse Samb rescued a point for the Teranga Lions, converting Ousseynou Seck’s assist.

The result offers Nigeria an opportunity to get their campaign back on track when they face Sudan later today.

The Super Eagles, who suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Senegal in their opening match, must win to stand a realistic chance of progressing to the next round.

Senegal currently lead the group with four points, followed by Congo on two.

Sudan sit third with one point, while Nigeria, under head coach Eric Chelle, are yet to register a point or a win in the tournament.

Kick-off for Nigeria’s crucial clash against Sudan is scheduled for later this evening.
