Super Eagles Wary of Jamaica Threat Ahead of Unity Cup Final

Defending champions Nigeria are determined not to take anything for granted when they face Jamaica in Saturday’s final of the 2026 Unity Cup at Charlton Athletic Stadium in London.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has praised the performances of the squad that defeated Zimbabwe 2-0 in Tuesday’s semi-final and hinted that he could make tactical and personnel adjustments ahead of the clash against the Reggae Boyz.
Nigeria and Jamaica also met in last year’s Unity Cup final, where the Super Eagles secured a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout victory after both sides played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in regulation time.
That triumph saw Nigeria retain the trophy they previously won in 2002 and 2004, the only previous editions of the competition before its recent revival.
In the inaugural edition in 2002, Nigeria defeated Jamaica 1-0 courtesy of a goal from former Golden Eaglets captain James Obiorah.
Two years later, the Republic of Ireland joined the tournament, but the Super Eagles once again emerged champions, with Bartholomew Ogbeche finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with three goals.
The 2004 edition also marked the international breakthrough of former striker Obafemi Martins, who scored on his debut for Nigeria during the competition.
Ahead of Saturday’s final, Chelle is expected to continue experimenting with his relatively fresh squad in London.
Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is pushing for another start after keeping a clean sheet on his debut against Zimbabwe.
The defensive quartet of Chibueze Oputa, Chibuike Nwaiwu, Igoh Ogbu, and Obinna Igboke could also retain their places following an impressive outing in the semi-final.
Igoh Ogbu, who currently plays for Slavia Prague, first broke into the Super Eagles setup during last year’s Unity Cup tournament.
In midfield, Tochukwu Nnadi may once again partner Alhassan Yusuf and Samson Tijani, while Terem Moffi, Philip Otele, and debut hero Femi Azeez are expected to lead the attack.
Cyprus-based goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, midfielder Tosin Oyedokun, and forwards Owen Oseni and Rafiu Durosinmi are also available after making positive impacts from the bench against Zimbabwe.
Azeez’s stunning debut performance, which saw him score twice against the Warriors, has particularly excited the Super Eagles technical crew.
The forward became the first debutant to score twice for Nigeria since Mathias Obianika achieved the feat in a 4-0 victory over Burkina Faso 55 years ago.
The Super Eagles trained at Cray Valley on Thursday ahead of Friday’s official training session scheduled to take place at The Valley Stadium.
