Sevilla eye January move for Sadiq Umar amid striker’s struggles at Real Sociedad

By Dayo Awoniyi

LaLiga side Sevilla FC are reportedly considering a January move for Super Eagles striker Sadiq Umar, as they look to bolster their attacking line-up for the second half of the season.

According to Spanish outlet Vamos Mi Sevilla, the 28-year-old forward has been identified as a key target by the club’s recruitment team, who are concerned about the team’s lack of cutting edge in front of goal despite decent individual returns from Akor Adams and Isaac Romero.

Adams has scored twice and provided one assist in seven league appearances, while Romero has found the net three times in eight matches. However, both strikers have struggled to maintain consistent form, prompting the club to seek additional firepower.

Sadiq Umar, currently at Real Sociedad, has endured a difficult campaign, making just two substitute appearances so far this season. His lack of game time comes amid a broader struggle to regain top form following a long-term ACL injury sustained three years ago.

Once regarded as one of the most promising strikers in LaLiga, Sadiq showed glimpses of his former self during a loan spell at Valencia last season, where he scored five goals in 16 appearances.

Sociedad are reportedly open to offloading the Nigerian international due to his limited role in the squad and high wages, despite his contract running until 2028. Sevilla are understood to be weighing up a move that could offer the player a fresh start and the opportunity to revive his career.

If the transfer materializes, Sadiq would become the third Nigerian player on Sevilla’s books, joining compatriots Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke.

Further developments are expected in the coming weeks as the January transfer window approaches.
