Maduka Okoye has been cleared of any wrongdoing after an Italian court permanently dropped the betting-related fraud investigation involving the Udinese Calcio goalkeeper, ending months of uncertainty surrounding the Nigerian international.
Okoye, who has impressed for Udinese this season, had previously been under investigation in connection with an alleged betting scandal that contributed to his absence from several matches earlier in the campaign.
The Super Eagles shot-stopper missed six Serie A fixtures at the beginning of the season, including games against Hellas Verona F.C., Inter Milan, Pisa Sporting Club, AC Milan, U.S. Sassuolo Calcio, and Cagliari Calcio.
Although Okoye returned to action in October, the aggravated fraud investigation linked to the case continued in the background.
However, according to Udine-based Italian newspaper Messaggero Veneto, the case was resolved sooner than anticipated after betting operator Snaitech formally withdrew its complaint.
During a pre-trial hearing, Judge Paolo Lauteri of the Udine court accepted the withdrawal and ruled that there was no case to answer, effectively bringing the proceedings to an end.
The ruling comes as a major relief for both the player and Udinese, especially given Okoye’s strong performances since returning to the side.
The Nigerian goalkeeper has recorded 10 clean sheets in 28 league appearances this season, playing a crucial role in Udinese’s solid Serie A campaign while further strengthening his position within the Nigeria national football team setup.
