Vincent Kompany expected to miss weeks after being taken to hospital

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany is expected to be absent for several weeks after suffering a sudden health scare which led to his emergency transfer to a hospital in Munich.
The 40-year-old Belgian collapsed on Friday while watching Bayern Munich’s under-23 side, coached by Dante, after attending part of the first-team training session.
Emergency services were called to the club before Kompany was flown to hospital by helicopter, causing considerable concern within Bayern Munich. Initial reports said his condition was stable despite the seriousness of the incident.
Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl told Sky Sport Germany that Kompany’s absence would extend beyond a few days.
“It will not be a matter of days, but weeks,” Eberl said.
Eberl added that Kompany was expected to remain in hospital for several days. He said he had spoken to both the manager and his wife after the incident to check on his condition.
The club is taking no risks with Kompany’s recovery and intends to give him sufficient time for further medical examinations and treatment. Bayern Munich has not attempted to set a timetable for his return to managing the team.
Kompany had recently been affected by a viral infection and hip pain, which had already caused him to miss some training sessions and one news conference. The precise cause of the latest incident remains unknown while medical tests are completed.
Danks to take charge
Assistant manager Aaron Danks will lead Bayern Munich during Kompany’s absence. His first match in temporary charge will be against Freiburg in the Bundesliga this weekend.
Danks has previously stepped in for Kompany, having taken responsibility when Bayern Munich faced Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final of the Champions League last season.
Despite the important fixtures ahead, Bayern Munich has no intention of putting pressure on Kompany to return quickly. The club’s priority is for him to make a full recovery before resuming his coaching duties.
