‘I expect to use him against Bochum’ — Werder coach offers positive Felix Agu update
Werder Bremen head coach Daniel Thioune has delivered encouraging news on the fitness of Super Eagles defender Felix Agu, revealing that the Nigerian international has returned to full training and could feature in Saturday’s pre-season friendly against VfL Bochum.
The 26-year-old left-back has endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines after a succession of injuries disrupted his 2025/26 campaign, but he is now edging closer to a long-awaited return to competitive action.
Speaking about Agu’s recovery, Thioune expressed optimism that the defender will be available for selection this weekend.
“I expect that I will be able to use him on Saturday against VfL Bochum,” Thioune told DeichStube.
Providing further insight into the player’s rehabilitation, the Werder Bremen coach added: “Felix’s workload has been managed so far, but he has returned to training.”
Agu’s return represents a significant boost for Werder Bremen, who were without one of their most reliable defenders for large parts of last season.
The former Germany youth international’s injury problems began in October 2025 when he sustained a syndesmosis ligament injury during Werder Bremen’s Bundesliga clash with FC St. Pauli. The ankle injury required an extended rehabilitation period, sidelining him for several months and also affecting his chances of representing Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Just as he appeared set to resume his career, Agu suffered another setback after picking up an adductor muscle injury shortly following his return, forcing him back into the treatment room.
The recurring injuries prevented the pacey full-back from building momentum and limited his contribution during a season in which Werder Bremen missed his defensive solidity, attacking runs and tactical versatility.
Now back on the training pitch, Agu will be hoping to put his injury troubles behind him and re-establish himself as a key figure for both Werder Bremen and the Super Eagles ahead of the new campaign.
A successful outing against Bochum would mark an important milestone in his recovery and provide a timely confidence boost as the Bundesliga season draws closer.
