2022 FIFA World Cup: Super Eagles don’t deserve to be in Qatar – Daniel Amokachi

Former Super Eagles captain and coach, Daniel Amokachi said Thursday’s friendly match where the Super Eagles lost 4-0 to Portugal showed that the team is not good enough to be at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the World Cup at the expense to arch-rivals Ghana on away-goal rule just two months after the nation failed to progress past the quarterfinal for the first time in 40 years in Cameroon.
And the former international admitted being one of those who said former coach Gernot Rohr wasn’t good enough for the Eagles but insists the time of his dismisal was poorly timed.
Following the latest crash in Lisbon, the Special Adviser To President Muhammadu Buhari on Sports blamed the Super Eagles woes on appointment of wrong coaches as well as calling up wrong players into the team.
“When you look at the Portugal game, that tells you that we don’t even deserve to be there (World Cup),” Amokachi said during a Channels Television broadcast on Sunday.
“There are one, two, three different angles that you have to look at it, bringing in the right coach, bringing in the right players and get the right environment to play at.
The 2022 NFF board member candidate advocated that the coaches look inwards and pick local talents for the team, saying that it is a philosophy that has worked for the team on multiple occasions.
“We always bring the wrong coaches to handle country like Nigeria; we always bring the wrong players.”
