By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Former Nigeria forward, Julius Efosa Agahowa has berated the penalty awarded to Portugal against the Black Stars of Ghana in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Portugal defeated Ghana 3-2 on Thursday with Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty opening the scoring for the Selecao.
Ronaldo netted Portugal’s opener from 12 yards, having been tripped by Mohammed Salisu inside the penalty area, the referee awarded a questionable penalty to Portugal.
“The penalty awarded to Portugal demoralized Ghana,” Aghahowa stated on Brila FM.
“The referee should have gone to the monitor to confirm that it was indeed a penalty. He didn’t and that affected the Ghanaians. The penalty is contestable. My problem with that is the ref didn’t even go to check.
“But thankfully they scored two goals and spiritedly went for the third and should motivate the team.”
And on Alidu Seidu who almost got himself sent off for reacting to a provocation from Joao Felix – an action also decried by the former Super Eagles forward.
“Alidu Seidu’s action was uncalled for. He could have been sent off for that and his team will suffer for it. African players have to be disciplined at this level.”
Ghana will attempt to bounce back from the 3-2 defeat against South Korea on November 28, at the Education City Stadium, Al Rayyan.
The Black Stars will also attempt to avenge the 2010 World Cup quarter-final defeat against Uruguay in its last group game with the South American side.
