Nigeria’s Christy Ucheibe eyes Women’s World Cup debut vs. Canada

By Samuel Ahmadu

Christy Ucheibe is looking forward to make her international bow on the global stage when Nigeria take on Canada in Friday morning’s FIFA 2023 Women’s World Cup opening Group B tie.

Although the Super Falcons are featuring in their ninth consecutive campaign in Australia and New Zealand, they would be hoping to start their preliminary series on a solid note.

The SL Benfica midfielder is one of the 13 players handed their maiden Women’s World Cup spot by Randy Waldrum following her impressive role in her club side’s domestic success in Portugal.

And the 22-year-old who is delighted with the invitation has vowed to give her best if given a chance to play.

”I’m happy to be have made the Women’s World Cup squad for Nigeria and very anxious to make my first ever appearance at the global stage,” Ucheibe told NigeriaFootball.ng.

“I am really excited about this opportunity. I remembered that I scored in my first Women’s African Cup of Nations Cup game for Nigeria against in Morocco last year.

“I believe that this can happen again. I’m looking forward to such a big tournament and will do my best for my country.”

Ucheibe who has three assists in 27 appearances in all competitions for SL Benfica, including in the UEFA Women’s Champions League last season will hope to replicate the title-winning form for the nine-time African queens at the Melbourne Stadium, Australia.

After shining at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations where she featured in three matches and scored once, she would be hoping to make an improved show at the 32-team tournament in Down Under.
