Alex Iwobi Inspired by Young Gunner Reiss Nelson’s Impressive Ascent

Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi has expressed his gratitude for the admiration and respect shown by fellow Arsenal Academy talent, Reiss Nelson, who is on the verge of being elevated to the first team. The 17-year-old Nelson showcased his potential during Arsenal’s pre-season friendly matches, a period during which Iwobi himself delivered commendable performances.
Iwobi, speaking to Arsenal Player, shared his surprise at being considered an inspiration by Nelson, saying, “Coming from him (Nelson), that is a surprise – the way he talks to me, you wouldn’t think I’m his inspiration! To be his inspiration, that’s crazy. But he’s a young lad, he’s got a long way to go and I’m sure he knows what to do.”
Reflecting on Nelson’s abilities, Iwobi commended the young player’s skills, highlighting his impressive technique and promising future. He added, “Most young players when they come into the first team, they look nervous, you normally have to introduce them and make it easy for them. But straight away he was calling for the ball, he’s demanding things – he plays like he’s mature, he’s comfortable. It’s good for him.”
While Iwobi looks forward to representing the Nigeria national team in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon in September, his Premier League playing time has been limited this season, with only 11 minutes on the field thus far. In Arsenal’s recent fixture against Stoke City, Iwobi came on as a 79th-minute substitute, replacing Granit Xhaka in a match that ended in a 1-0 defeat for the Gunners.
