Henry Onyekuru Reflects on Anderlecht’s UCL Defeat to Celtic

RSC Anderlecht’s young forward, Henry Onyekuru, has expressed his disappointment following the UEFA Champions League (UCL) clash with Scottish champions, Celtic, which marked his first start of the season in the competition. Anderlecht’s home turf, the Constant Van den Stock stadium, witnessed a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic, with an own goal from Kara Mbodji and goals by Leigh Griffiths and Scott Sinclair securing a convincing away victory.

Onyekuru showcased his potential by playing the full duration of the match, occupying the left flank for his team in what was only his second appearance in the prestigious tournament. The 20-year-old football prodigy took to his Twitter handle, @henryconyekuru, to convey his sentiments, stating, “Disappointed with the result, but blessed to make my first start in the @ChampionsLeague.”

Furthermore, the defeat dealt a double blow to Onyekuru and his Anderlecht teammates, as they missed out on a potentially lucrative bonus promised by the club’s management. Anderlecht had pledged a £35,000 bonus per player for a victory and a £15,000 bonus per player for every draw recorded in Group B, underlining the financial stakes linked to their UCL performance.

Anderlecht now faces the daunting challenge of confronting Paris Saint-Germain in their forthcoming UCL encounter next month. The clash with the French giants presents another opportunity for Onyekuru and his team to prove their mettle in one of Europe’s most esteemed football competitions, as they seek to recover from their disappointing start.
