Record African Women’s Player of the Year winner, Asisat Oshoala, scored her second goal in the National Women Soccer League for Bay FC, but it wasn’t enough to save her team from a 2-1 loss to hosts San Diego Wave on Saturday night.

Makenzy Doniak opened the scoring for the hosts with a beautiful right-footed strike from the edge of the box in the 13th minute at Snapdragon Stadium.

The goal spurred the visitors on to seek an equalizer, but they couldn’t find one in the first half.

Three minutes into the second half, Bay FC finally leveled the score as Oshoala was on hand to tap in a rebound from a header that hit the crossbar.

San Diego Wave made a tactical substitution, bringing on American international Jaedyn Shaw. The move paid off as Shaw scored the winning goal in the 78th minute, poking home Elyse Bennett’s cross.

Oshoala was replaced by Ghanaian player Princess Marfo in the 79th minute after scoring her second goal of the season.

Bay FC currently sits in tenth position in the 14-team NWSL table with six points after six games.
