CAF Awards 2024: Ademola Lookman disappointed over Victor Boniface’s omission
By Saheed Afolabi
Nigeria playmaker Ademola Lookman has voiced his concerns over the exclusion of his compatriot Victor Boniface from the final three nominees for the CAF Africa Player of the Year (APOTY) award.
Despite dealing with injury setbacks, Boniface enjoyed a stellar season, scoring 21 goals in 34 matches across all competitions.
His exceptional performances helped Bayer Leverkusen secure the German Bundesliga title and the DFB Pokal, marking an impressive debut campaign in Germany.
Lookman highlighted Boniface’s personal achievements and the titles he won, which he believes should have warranted a nomination for the prestigious award.
The Atalanta forward expressed his surprise at the decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to overlook his teammate.
“Obviously, Boniface, my teammate, had an amazing season last year. I think with his personal achievements, his goals, and also winning two titles with Leverkusen, he certainly deserved more recognition,” Lookman told Sporty TV.
“They were unbeaten in their league, which is special. Maybe he could have been nominated for sure, but you know, I am not the one who makes the rules.”
The 2024 CAF Awards ceremony is set to take place in Marrakech, Morocco, on December 16.
