Enyimba bow out of CAF Confederation Cup after loss to Zamalek

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

It was the end of the road for Nigeria’s sole representative on the continent after Enyimba’s 3-1 loss to Egyptian side Zamalek in the final Group D game on Sunday.

The People’s Elephant needed a win at the Cairo International Stadium while hoping another Egyptian side, Al Masry drop points at home against Black Bulls of Mozambique.

Unfortunately, Enyimba lost their match 3-1 against Zamalek ending their campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Mostafa Shabaly opened the scoring for the host in the 29th minute, while Seifeddine Jaziri doubled the lead three minutes into the second half.

Ifeanyi Ihemekwele pulled a goal back for the People’s Elephant in the 57th minute but Jaziri’s second goal of the match ended the contest.

Zamalek topped Group D with 14 points after six games and qualified for the quarter-final alongside their compatriots, Al Masry, who defeated the Black Bulls to secure their place with nine points.

Enyimba FC (five points) and Blac Bulls (four points) bowed out of the tournament.

The People’s Elephant will now shift their focus to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), starting with the clash against Kano Pillars on January 23, 2025.
