‘No Regrets’: Nigerian-Born Ime Okon Proud to Represent South Africa

Nigerian-born South African defender Ime Okon has insisted that he has no regrets about choosing to represent South Africa instead of his country of birth, declaring that Bafana Bafana is where his heart truly belongs.

Okon has been one of South Africa’s standout performers at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, earning praise for his calm and assured displays in defence despite the team’s disappointing campaign.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, the centre-back reaffirmed his commitment to South Africa and dismissed any possibility of switching allegiance to Nigeria.

“I don’t know what to say, but at the end of the day, I know where my heart lies,” Okon said.

“I have played for South Africa in the COSAFA games and I scored. South Africa is everything to me. I don’t know anything besides South Africa. That is home.”

The defender, who was born in Nigeria but raised in South Africa, stressed that his connection to the country runs far deeper than football.

When asked whether he would consider representing Nigeria if the opportunity arose, Okon remained firm in his response.

“No, not really. But even if they call me, South Africa is my home. That’s what I have to say,” he added.

Okon developed both his life and football career in South Africa, progressing through the ranks before earning opportunities with the senior national team. He has previously represented Bafana Bafana at regional competitions and continues to establish himself as a key figure in the squad.

His latest comments publicly reaffirm his loyalty to South Africa, underlining a commitment he says is rooted in identity, upbringing and a deep sense of belonging.
