Gayton McKenzie applauds Osimhen: “A player who puts country above fame”

South Africa’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, has praised Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen, describing him as a model of professionalism and a standard for African footballers to emulate.
McKenzie’s commendation, reported by Nigeria Footballng, follows Osimhen’s decisive performance in Nigeria’s 4–1 semi-final victory over Gabon, where the Galatasaray striker scored twice to send the Super Eagles into Sunday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff final.
Speaking in a conversation with renowned journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, the minister hailed Osimhen for his consistency, humility, and unwavering commitment to the national team.
He emphasized that the 26-year-old represents the values African players should embody both on and off the pitch.
“Victor Osimhen is truly one of the best players. He is a great example of what needs to change for African players,” McKenzie said, applauding the striker’s discipline, focus, and team-first mentality.
McKenzie also criticized the growing trend of players prioritizing social media attention over national-duty commitment, urging others to follow Osimhen’s path.
“We have the wrong type of ego in some players. This player is playing for his country and not for Instagram and likes. I admire him greatly,” he added.
Osimhen’s influence continues to resonate beyond football, as admiration builds for his leadership, passion, and patriotism.
With Nigeria set to face DR Congo in Rabat on Sunday, the forward is expected to play another critical role as the Super Eagles chase a coveted spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
