NWFL Premiership: Edo and Bayelsa Queens qualify for Super Six on final Matchday

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Edo Queens and Bayelsa Queens picked the final two tickets from Group B for the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six after Matchday 14 ties on Wednesday.

Rivers Angels which picked a Super Six ticket during the previous Matchday faltered 2-0 to Ekiti Queens in Ado Ekiti with goals from Olaleye Odunayo and Salau Rashidat ensuring that the host escaped relegation at the end of their debut campaign in the top flight.

In Asaba, Edo Queens finished second behind Rivers Angels to also qualify for the season-ending Super Six after a 1-1 draw with holders, Delta Queens.

Odoma Amarachi’s 87th-minute goal was canceled by Arit Itu three minutes later.

In Yenegoa, Bayelsa Queens also qualified for the Super Six in third place from Group B despite a 2-1 loss to FC Robo Queens.

A brace from Folashade Ijamilusi was not enough for the Lagos Landladies to qualify for consecutive Super Six after a negative goal difference negated their resolve to reach the title-deciding stage of the season.

In Ikenne, Remo Stars Ladies’ 2-1 victory against Sunshine Queens confirmed the visitors’ return to the second tier of women’s football in the country.

A brace from Adaobi Okah was enough to condemn the Akure-based side to relegation despite Ajibade Taiwo’s 56th-minute goal which reduced the deficit.

With Wednesday’s results, the Super Six ticket were confirmed as Nasarawa Amazons, Heartland Queens, Confluence Queens, Rivers Angels, Edo Queens, and Bayelsa Queens will jostle for the league title and the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the West African Zone B (WAFU-B) Qualifiers for the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League.
