Osimhen apologises for missed chances, shifts focus to DR Congo’s WC playoff final

By Wale Mustapha

Victor Osimhen has praised the resilience of the Super Eagles while taking responsibility for missed opportunities in Nigeria’s hard-fought 4–1 extra-time victory over Gabon in Thursday’s FIFA World Cup playoff semifinal in Rabat.

Eric Chelle’s men were pushed to the limit by a disciplined Gabonese side and required a dominant extra-time performance to seal progression, with Osimhen scoring twice after earlier frustrations.

The Galatasaray striker admitted disappointment at failing to convert two clear chances in regulation time that could have spared Nigeria a nervy finish.

The 26-year-old said he apologised to his teammates immediately after the misses, vowing to make amends — a promise he fulfilled in extra time.

“I’m a professional player, and I’ve been in the game for a long time. I’ve missed opportunities before against intimidating teams,” Osimhen told Cali Sports. “Sometimes I score unexpected goals, sometimes I miss easy ones. But I always have the mentality to correct it. I told my teammates I was sorry and that I’d fix it in extra time — and I did.

“Kudos to the team for the assists. We deserve this win against a quality Gabonese side.”

Osimhen also praised Nigeria’s teamwork and the quality of chances created, noting that Gabon’s organisation forced the Eagles to remain sharp until the final whistle.

With the victory secured, the Super Eagles have now shifted their focus to Sunday’s playoff final against DR Congo. Osimhen stressed that the squad remains united and determined to improve.

“The next round won’t be easy, but we’ll give everything to make the final,” he said.
