Former Nigeria junior international Peter Nieketen is urging the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to appoint a permanent coach for the senior men’s national team ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers scheduled for October and November 2024.

Nieketen emphasized the need for the NFF to make a decisive choice regarding the head coach before the next international windows.

“Our NFF board members often adopt a fire brigade approach,” he told Brila FM. “So far, we’ve had one win and one draw in the qualifiers, but there are still important games ahead.”

He expressed confidence in the players, stating, “If they come together with commitment, Nigeria will definitely qualify. They performed well.”

However, he stressed that the ultimate decision regarding the coaching situation rests with the NFF and hopes they act quickly to avoid a reactive strategy.

Following the resignation of Finidi George, who previously coached the three-time African champions, the NFF attempted to appoint German tactician Bruno Labbadia.

In the interim, Augustine Eguavoen has led the team in their last two AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

As the team prepares for their upcoming matches, it remains to be seen whether a permanent coach will be appointed in time.
