In the opening match of the men’s football event at the 2023 African Games, Nigeria’s U-20 national team suffered a 2-1 defeat to their Ugandan counterparts at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The game saw Arafat Usama of Uganda breaking the deadlock in the 34th minute, putting Nigeria on the back foot. However, the Flying Eagles managed to equalize with a goal from Sadiq Isyaka in the 37th minute, showing resilience and determination.
Despite their efforts, Nigeria’s hopes were dashed when Ivan Irinmbabazi scored for Uganda in the final nine minutes of the match, securing the win for his team and leaving Ladan Boso’s side disappointed.
The victory propelled Uganda to the top of Group B with three points, ahead of Senegal, who also secured a win against South Sudan earlier in the tournament. Nigeria currently sits in third position, setting the stage for an intense encounter with South Sudan in their next match.
Both Nigeria and South Sudan will look to bounce back from their opening defeats when they face each other on March 11, 2024.
