NPFL: Stanley Eguma reflects on tough win against Katsina United

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

After Rivers United’s 2-0 win over Katsina United in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) rescheduled match on Thursday, the coach of the Port Harcourt based side, Stanley Eguma says the game was not an easy clash.

Deputy Echeta and Kazie Enyinnaya were the goal scorers as former Nigerian league winners clinched a dominant win over Katsina United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium .

The Changi Boys had proven to be tricky opponents on their visits to the Garden City down the years, but this was a game that Rivers United dominated throughout and were eventually rewarded with a fair scoreline.

Deputy Echeta headed in on 44 minutes following a cut back header by Andy Okpe, while it would take until 81 minutes for us to make certain of the points when Kazie Enyinnaya blasted into the net after another set up by Andy Okpe.

“This game was difficult. The Katsina United team played a parked midfield and defence that it was difficult to break,” Eguma said after the match.

“My players did their best, we had to change tactics for us to be able to break, getting one goal in the first half and in the second half we got the second goal. It was not an easy game. It was a really difficult game for us.”

The win takes Rivers United up to 12th place on the NPFL standings with 40 points from 26 matches.

They head to the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa to take on Bayelsa United on Monday in a matchday 32 fixture, and then begin their campaign in the President Federation’s Cup with a round 64 clash against Ikukuoma FC on Thursday at the Enyimba FC Stadium in Aba.
